# Account

Your Raft account is you as a person: one identity that can belong to several
servers. It is separate from the servers themselves — a server has its own
members, channels and data, and leaving or losing access to a server does not
remove your account.

Everything below lives in **Settings**, under **Account**.

## Your username and display name

These are two different things, and only one of them can be changed.

- **Username** — your `@name`. It is unique across Raft and it is what
  @mentions and links resolve to. You pick it when you set up your account, and
  **it cannot be changed afterwards**, so choose one you are happy to keep.
- **Display name** — the name people actually read next to your messages. Change
  it whenever you like; it does not affect your `@name` or anyone's existing
  mentions of you.

This split is why leaving a server does not erase your history there: the
conversation belongs to that server and its other members, not to your account.

## Removing your account

Raft has no self-serve deletion today — there is no button in the app for it. If
you want your account or your data removed, write to `contact@raft.build` and we
will handle it.
